The irony of Vi’s reluctance to budge was not lost on them. But how could they be so easily swayed by Hester’s claims when they doubted their own mom’s ability to observe auras and converse with ghosts? Perhaps if their experiences were similar, they could relate and give credence to her words. That was how they approached the alleged existence of deities as a whole; if they couldn’t sense or see them, then they mustn’t be real.

But that line of thought bucked against the reality of countless others.

They shifted in bed, careful not to disturb the sleeping figure curled up at their side. Hester boasted her unwavering stamina hours before, and had fallen into a deep slumber once the fun was over.

′Like a rock,′ they thought, giving her one last look before reaching for their phone on the bedside table.

It was jarring, waking up in a bed that wasn’t their own. Everything felt off, too neat and somewhat bland, from the scant furnishings to the first rays of sunshine peeking through the curtains.

7:15; much too early to shake Hester awake and head downstairs. They had a text from their mom asking when they were coming home and to be safe. Vi gave her a loose ETA and left the phone to cuddle with Hester, whose mouth was now half open.

They hooked a thumb beneath her upper lip and stretched it up some, exposing one fang. If one didn’t know any better, they could almost pass as one of those fake vampire teeth that were popular during Halloween. But having been on the receiving end twice now, they were convinced it wasn’t just a happy accident. More so when Hester mentioned being born with a full set of teeth, a phenomenon not unheard of but came with its own set of superstitions.

The puncture wounds in their neck had closed up and almost fully healed when they checked before bed. But the set on their inner thigh, what Hester called the femoral artery, ached and itched. Hester delighted in telling them the dangers of rapidly bleeding out if it were a normal injury. But her saliva mimicked that of a vampire bat, acting as both a coagulant and numbing agent. If not for the earlier bite, they would’ve been hesitant to give her leeway.

Ignoring the initial bite and the aftermath, it felt…really good. No, better than good. Fantastic! Before Hester, the idea of mixing pleasure with pain never crossed their mind, but they were open to more. The main concern was the loss of blood, but Hester assured them it wouldn’t be an everyday thing.

″Ow.” Vi pulled their thumb free of Hester’s mouth, hissing between their teeth. She was glaring at them through half-lidded eyes.

″That’s what you get,” she said, voice groggy from sleep.

They tucked their bleeding digit into their mouth. It wasn’t any deeper than a bite from a feckless kitten, but it still hurt.

″Give it to me.” She stuck her tongue out.

Vi almost called her gross and then remembered everything else she’d done.
